Caroline Stephen (b. Los Angeles, California) is an image-based artist located in Los Angeles, California. She initially studied politics and psychology, with a concentration in peace and conflict studies and research in prison reform at Oberlin College. Eventually, she refocused her path toward visual art, studying both photography and fine art at ArtCenter College of Design. Her work explores the performative aspects of femininity — such as image, obedience, and emotional labor — while tracing these expectations back to their origins in the social conditioning and symbolic play of girlhood. Stephen’s photography relies on her intimate relationship with her subjects, as she portrays her own experience through their bodies. Her sculptural work translates photographs into three-dimensional forms, confronting the boundaries of the image.
