Caroline Stephen (b. Los Angeles, California) is an image-based artist located in Los Angeles, California and Ithaca, New York. She initially studied politics and psychology, with a concentration in peace and conflict studies and research in prison reform at Oberlin College. Eventually, she refocused her path toward visual art, studying both photography and fine art at ArtCenter College of Design. She is currently an MFA candidate at Cornell University. Her work explores the performative aspects of femininity (such as image, obedience, and emotional labor) while tracing these expectations back to their origins in the social conditioning and symbolic play of girlhood.
